New Ireland Province lies off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea, stretching along the island of New Ireland and surrounding smaller islands. One of the country’s 22 provinces, it covers an area of approximately 9,600 km².
The provincial capital, Kavieng, is the largest town and a key hub for commerce, transport and tourism. Other major centres include Namatanai, the administrative heart of Namatanai District, and the coastal town of Konos.
Known for its lush rainforests, vibrant coral reefs, pristine beaches and rugged mountains, New Ireland is one of the country’s most striking island destinations. The province is rich in natural resources, including copper, gold and nickel, alongside timber and fisheries.
The economy is driven by agriculture, fishing, mining and tourism, with fertile land supporting crops such as cocoa, copra, coconut, vanilla and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Fishing plays a vital role in the local economy, supported by the province’s abundant marine resources, while small-scale mining continues to contribute to the local economy.
Over 20 languages are spoken across New Ireland, with Tigak, Nalik and Patpatar being amongst the most common. English and Tok Pisin are also widely used.
