Oro Province, also known as North Province, is one of Papua New Guinea’s least populated regions, spanning approximately 22,800 km². Renowned for its volcanic fjords, coral-rich coastlines, and rainforest-covered mountains, the province supports incredible biodiversity, including the world’s largest butterfly—the Queen Alexandra’s birdwing.

Oro holds deep historical significance as the starting point of the Kokoda Track, the iconic World War II route through the Owen Stanley Range. Coastal villages like Buna and Gona still bear relics from this defining chapter in history.

The provincial capital, Popondetta, serves as the main gateway to Oro’s inland and coastal experiences. From here, travellers set out for Kokoda, connect with local communities, or explore natural highlights such as the striking fjords of Tufi.
